A Great Website Doesn’t Need to Be Complicated

A great website doesn’t need complicated technology, endless pages or a custom-built platform with a development budget that requires its own board meeting.

For many service businesses, the better answer is much simpler.

A smart website. Clear strategy. Strong copy. Thoughtful SEO. Easy UX. Design with enough personality that people remember you after closing the tab.

That can all happen on Squarespace.

Your customers do not care what your website is built on

There’s a strange idea that a serious business needs a Very Serious Website™.

Custom everything. Complicated CMS. An impressive list of technical specifications nobody outside the project will ever read.

Meanwhile, your customer arrives thinking: Can these people help me?

They are not inspecting your source code and gasping:

“My God. Is that a bespoke content management system? Margaret, get the chequebook!!!”

They care about their experience.

Can they quickly understand what you do? Does your business look credible? Can they find what they came for? Does the site feel good to use on their phone? Do they know what to do next?

For many service businesses, Squarespace gives us everything we need to create a very good business website.

The clever bit is what goes into it.

Yes, you could DIY it

That’s one of Squarespace’s strengths. You can pick a template, upload your logo, write some copy and get a website online without needing to learn code or befriend someone called Darryl who only communicates through support tickets.

And for some businesses, DIY makes complete sense.

But being able to build a website and knowing what should go on it are two different things.

  • What belongs on the homepage?

  • What should you say first?

  • Which services need their own pages?

  • What are your customers searching for?

  • Why should someone choose you over the four other businesses sitting open in their tabs?

  • Where should the enquiry button go?

  • Why has everyone decided to put “Welcome to our website” at the top? (They know where they are.)

That’s where professional website design services earn their keep.

The value is in the thinking

Before we touch the design, we want to know what the website needs to achieve.

  • Who are you trying to attract?

  • What do those people need to understand?

  • What questions keep coming up before someone buys?

  • What makes your service different?

  • What gets people over the line?

  • And where does your existing website make everything unnecessarily difficult?

Those answers shape the website strategy, sitemap, copy, SEO, UX and design.

Then comes the cool stuff. And yes, cool matters.

A website should feel like somebody cared. It should have personality. Interesting details. Good pacing. A visual point of view.

But every creative decision should still help the website do its job.

SEO starts before the website is finished

SEO shouldn’t appear three days before launch like someone suddenly remembered Google exists.

Good website design in NZ considers search from the beginning.

What are people looking for? Which services deserve dedicated pages? What questions could useful content answer? How should pages connect?

That can influence everything from the sitemap to the copy. SEO needs to work with the website. Not be sprinkled over it afterwards.

Your website should earn its keep

A service business website has a job. Ideally, several.

It should attract the right people. Explain your value. Answer questions. Show your work. Build confidence. Make enquiries easier. And give potential customers a very clear sense of who they’re dealing with before you ever speak to them.

In other words, it should be helping the business.

Not sitting online looking pretty while you do all the heavy lifting.

At George Design, we often use Squarespace for service business websites for exactly this reason. It gives us plenty of creative freedom while giving clients a site they can confidently manage after launch.

For ecommerce, we also work with Shopify. If a project needs more complex development, we can bring developers into the mix.

But complicated isn’t the ambition. Effective is.

Strategy behind the structure. Copy worth reading. SEO considered from day one. UX that feels easy. And enough creative edge to make your business memorable.

Summary

A great service business website doesn’t need complicated technology or an enormous page count. Platforms like Squarespace can provide an excellent foundation. What makes the difference is the thinking around it, including website strategy, copy, SEO, UX and creative design. Start with what your website needs to achieve, then build around that.
